Watch over us took years to complete. A work that started as a depiction of joy, still depicted joy by the end of the painting, but giving joy a different meaning. This work was started in 2024 and completed in 2025, after the loss of my beloved grandmother.
The work shows characters playing trumpets to depict the call to heaven, as if to say “welcome home”, supported by dancers which was inspired by scenes from the actual funeral, but with an exaggeration. To say, as sad as we are, we are grateful for a life well lived. But there is an irony in this as at the time of writing this, there’s still confusion and pain behind the loss. So why dance? Just may be the confusing nature of grief?
Characters at the top of the paining show the departed, watching over us as we dance in the knowledge that they’re in a better place.
To you though, this might just be a reminder of joy!
